I definatly agree with you on the concept that he is stuck so much on focusing on time. It gives a sense that he wants to go back in the past how everything was before he went away and before Caddy went away. He does not know how to cope and the only way he knows how to calm down is by refering to time. You brought up alot of insight to these reasons in your blog that help us realize some of this a little better.

I definitely see what you are saying about Sula not being right in the head, and how one could compare her to The Sound and The Fury. The situation in which Sula sees her mother burning to death alone shows that she is an odd kid, who will eventually turn into a very strange woman. If a kid witnessed something like that in this day and age, they would probably be treated medically for a very very long time, because something as horrible as that would mess a person up for life.

Well thanks for the t ribute in your blog!!! But I never thought of comparing the narrator Henry and the narrator from Invisible Man so closely. Yes, I did see a few parallels, but never such distinct ones. I really dont get the significance of Kwang either, sure he is a character in the story, but so what?!?! Oh well, I suppose we will know someday!

Your summary of Sula was wonderful and it did answer many questions for me. I did not think that perhaps she needed closure, I suppose I am a different kind of person and don’t understand the whole closure thing. I agree with you that the ending leaves one too many questions. Its one thing to leave you with one question that you have to draw your own conclusions about, but its a complete other to leave you with several questions. Oh well.

I definately agree with you in saying that the characters in this book have the same manner of those in the Sound in the Fury. This book is a much easier read, and I find it quite interesting as well.

I also agree that there are definately some crazy characters in this novel and some of the others that we have read. I also agree that it was very odd that nothing was done about the boy who drown in the river.

I would also have to agree I can see how this sorta relates with the sound and fury with those characters that just don’t seem right in the mind. Like what is the deal with crazy characters!!!???

The scene where Hannah, Sula’s mother, burns in a fire while she watches is very interesting scene. Toni Morrison never ltt us know why Sula just watches. Is she paralyzed with fear? Is she paralyzed with intrest? Is she just deatched. We may never know and I don’t think it was the point Morrison was trying to make. I think she may have wanted her readers to focus on people have to say about Sula, including what they say about this incident.

I agree also that some parts of this story seem very confusing and that you have to go back and re read them again or even look at spark notes to see if you can understand what is going on. I also found interesting the idea of rebirth because i didn’t see it like that but now that you said it i see how that too was in that chapter and theres a lot of symbolic meaning with the white and the womens name being mary

I also agree that this book was definately an easier read than others we have read this semester.I too enjoyed what I have read so far. I have always been interested in racism and history so i think this will be a good book for me
